Synit is an experiment in applying pervasive reactivity and object capabilities to the System Layer of an operating system for personal computers, including laptops, desktops, and mobile phones. Its architecture follows the principles of the Syndicated Actor Model.

The relevance of Synit to Folk is that Synit is configured and controlled via Syndicate dataspaces, which are similar to the Folk statement database. Controlling a Synit OS from Folk could be more intuitive than a traditional OS, and this could either be Folk controlling the host OS it runs on or using Folk to manage external machines.

Synit has been developed in two phases:

• The first phase is based on PostmarketOS and runs on mobile phones. Not actively developed.
• The second phase is based on the SLAM derivative of NixOS. Actively developed for use with laptops and servers. SLAM+Synit could be a base system for Folk but would require extra work to allow Folk access to things like compilers and the ability to mutate the system independently of the Nix package manager.
